Personality:
Akane Awakusu is described as being 'blessed by the world.' Her family is wealthy, her parents are supportive and kind, and she is surrounded by friends at school. She isn't what you'd call spoiled though. Actually she's a very kind girl who enjoys bringing smiles to the people around her. She decided to become a painter less out of any love for art, but rather to support her father's art galleries. She became class rep to help out her teachers and fellow students at school. Even though she knew that she might become the next target, she still stood up to the bullies that were picking on another girl in her class. Her success at that led her to more regularly mediate disputes among her classmates. She never thought of herself as above them or in charge, and believed instead that they all respected her as an equal. The fact that everyone in her class was getting along and she was always surrounded by friends made her life seem almost perfect. Too bad it was based on a lie.
When she discovered that her Grandfather was the head of a powerful Yakuza group, and that her 'friends' at school were only nice because their parents had drilled a fear of retribution into them, her perfect little world came crashing down. Even the art galleries that she wanted to help support were just fronts for laundering dirty money. The shock was too much to bear. Luckily, Akane is clever for her age. So when she decided to run away from home, she didn't do so without a plan. She made sure to do a lot of research on the area, so she knew where the all night internet cafes and other places she could stay were located. She even had the foresight to text her mother and claim she was at a friend's house for the first few nights.
That said, she's still a ten year old girl. She may be a tad more intellegent than average, but she's still naive enough to believe that a ten year old girl could survive on the streets on Ikebukurou. Or to trust strangers she met on the internet. And despite everything that had happened, it just wasn't in her to hate her family. Even though she said she wasn't sure whether she still liked her father or grandfather, she was extremely worried about their safety when one of her helpful internet friends warned her that they would be assassinated. This information brought out a very different side of that helpful little girl. Most little girls would have run home to check on their family or tried to get the police to help. Akane decided to eliminate the assassin herself. The apple might not have fallen as far from the tree as it thought. And even facing an opponent like Shizuo Heiwajima, her bravery and determination did not waver a bit.
She's been through a lot, and her perception of the world has had to change almost completely, but at heart Akane is still the same kind little girl. She still wants to help others, still cares deeply for her family, and still wants to be respected by her peers. When she and her father are finally reunited, she apologies profusely, and mentions how glad she is that he's okay. And Akane promises to apologize to her mother for worrying her so much. She knows though, that she can't go back to her old dreams. Too much has changed. She has more or less come to terms with the family business, even if she doesn't quite agree with it, but her 'friends' at school are still just pretending. Akane does become quite friendly with Shizuo after the misunderstanding about him wanting to attack her family is cleared up. She can be seen hanging out with him and Tom sometimes when they aren't busy. She even decides she wants to get stronger. She starts taking martial arts classes with the intention of becoming strong enough to rival Shizuo himself someday.
